Traffic Engineer

Department: CO-Denver
Location: Denver, CO

Background

The National Park Service Field Operations Technical Support Center (FOTSC) operates and maintains 125 permanent traffic count stations located in 40 park units and is preparing to implement a multi-year program of temporary traffic counts at some 600 locations around the country.

Objective

The employee will be working on site (with travel as needed to the various parks) at the National Park Service’s Denver (Colorado) Service Center until September 30, 2023.

General Requirements

The employee will actively manage activities under this contract, per government-approved procedures and protocols. The successful candidate will require the following qualifications:

  • Traffic Engineer with a at least 2-5 years of Experience.
  • Experience with traffic monitoring practices, utilizing a traffic database, creating monthly and seasonal factors, and applying the factors to coverage counts quality control. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required; field work in park units may require hiking up to 0.5 miles in rugged terrain. 

Responsibilities

  • Redevelop and manage the FOTSC coverage count program, which will be comprised of approximately 600 short-term count stations.
  • Assist FOTSC Manager in the creation of monthly and annual traffic count reports for each park.
  • Assist NPS with the design on a traffic data portion of the NPS Navigator website.
  • Provide backup support to the FOTSC Senior Engineer in dealing with permanent count station traffic data, including Quality Control.
  • Conduct field work, scoping new count stations and/or inspecting/repairing existing count stations based on FOTSC’s specifications and creating inspection reports.
  • Review inspection reports created by FHWA or its contractors.
  • Analyze traffic data in select parks for traffic patterns.
  • Upload traffic data daily from traffic counters to FOTSC’s traffic data storage mechanism
  • Maintain daily log of traffic counter communication ability
  • Work with park units to troubleshoot and replace malfunctioning traffic count station components
  • Test, update firmware and program traffic counters and modems
  • Work with park units to conduct their annual inspections and review results
  • Drive Federal government vehicles.
  • Conduct field work, scoping new count stations and inspecting/repairing existing count stations based on FOTSC’s specifications.
  • Experience in trouble-shooting electronic traffic monitoring/count station equipment is a plus
