Transportation Planner/Engineer

Location: New York, NY

VHB’s New York City team is looking for a Transportation Planner or Engineer (0 to 4 years’ experience) with a strong interest in planning public transit services. This is an exciting opportunity to work within our dynamic transit and rail team, across diverse disciplines, giving you exposure to a wide variety of projects in size and scope. The transportation planner or engineer will work as a team resource on projects related to bus and rail transportation planning and conceptual engineering. These projects often require compliance with City Environmental Quality (CEQR), the State Environmental Quality Act (SEQRA), and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). The successful candidate will have internship or job experience working for an agency or private firm on projects related to transportation planning or environmental review, preferably with a focus on transit and rail project development.

Together, we work to improve mobility, enhance communities and economic vitality, and balance development and infrastructure needs with environmental stewardship.


  • Analyze public transit data (ridership data, surveys, and operations)
  • Write sections of reports related to transit service evaluation, service planning, and infrastructure planning
  • Conduct database and GIS-based analyses, including demographics
  • Prepare graphics and maps based upon data analyses
  • Prepare existing conditions reports and transportation chapters of environmental compliance documents
  • Conduct route and system performance analyses
  • Organize data collection activities in the office and the field
  • Assist in the creation of route schedules; knowledge of GTFS schedules a plus
  • Conduct research as needed to assist senior staff on projects
  • Assist with community outreach activities
  • Creatively solve multimodal transportation problems
  • Work successfully with clients, members of the public, and project teams
  • Prepare and give effective presentations

Skills and abilities:

  • Exceptional verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Comfortable with analytical tasks including creation of spreadsheets and databases
  • Team-oriented
  • Highly motivated, self-starter
  • Demonstrated ability in collaborative problem solving with stakeholders, clients, and teammates
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office and ArcGIS
  • Experience with SketchUp and Adobe Suite is a plus



  • 0 to 4 years of transportation planning experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in city/urban planning, transportation engineering or related field, or equivalent experience. A Master’s degree (or one in progress) in one of these fields is a plus.
  • Previous internship or employment in the transportation planning or railroad engineering field
  • Strong interest in public transportation and sustainable mobility
