Geography and Planning Intern

Geography or Planning Intern 2019-2020

VHBs growing Charlotte office is seeking talented geography or planning interns to join our team. Position is flexible (could be either 4- or 8-hour shifts) and be willing and available to continue internship beyond summer on a part-time basis during the 2019-2020 school year. The qualified candidate will contribute across multiple project teams and provide a range of services relating to transportation planning, geography, data analysis and GIS.

VHBs passionate professionals include engineers, scientists, planners, and designers who partner with public and private clients in the transportation, real estate, institutional, and energy industries, as well as federal, state, and local governments. Together, we work to improve mobility, enhance communities, and economic vitality, and balance development with infrastructure needs as well as environmental stewardship.

Responsibilities would include:

  • Review and synthesis of planning documents
  • Development, synthesis, management, and analysis of data
  • GIS production

Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong skillset of written and oral communication, critical thinking, and time management
  • Ability to work collaboratively as well as independently with guidance
  • Background experience working with ArcGIS Desktop (ArcMap) and cartographic production
  • Working knowledge of editing Shapefiles (.SHP) and File GeoDatabases (.GDB)
  • Demonstrated experience creating (and refining) high quality maps and data products through a portfolio highlighting their previous work
  • Working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite especially Excel
  • Experience with ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Server, AutoCAD is preferred, but not required


  • 0-1 years of GIS/Planning/Geography experience
  • Working towards B.S. degree in the fields of geography, cartography, planning, engineering, computer science, transportation or a related field
  • Experience with Esri ArcGIS Desktop software suite
  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Certificate is preferred, but not required
  • Be available to work 32+ hours during summer and at least 20 hours during 2019-2020 school year with the exception of the week of finals.
