Transportation Engineer

Department: MA-Springfield
Location: Springfield, MA

VHB is GROWING! Our Springfield, MA office is looking for a highly organized and energetic Transportation Engineer to join our Highway Design team. This is an exciting opportunity to work within a dynamic team, across diverse disciplines, giving you exposure to a wide variety of projects in size and scope. This person will work with others to advance a broad range of transportation planning, traffic engineering, and roadway design projects. The ideal candidate should possess a “can-do” attitude. 

VHB’s passionate professionals include engineers, scientists, planners, and designers who partner with public and private clients in the transportation, real estate, institutional, and energy industries, as well as federal, state, and local governments.

Together, we work to improve mobility, enhance communities and economic vitality, and balance development and infrastructure needs with environmental stewardship.

Duties include traffic engineering, roadway engineering, drainage design, and cost estimating in accordance with the MassDOT Design Guidebook. Our team uses its skills and experience to improve our communities with a sustainable, context driven and integrated project delivery mindset. Our clients include municipalities, MassDOT and other state agencies, and private partners who support the development of the places we live, work, recreate and learn. 

Project Opportunities:

  • Roadway improvement projects in rural communities
  • Rail trail projects in environmentally sensitive areas    
  • Roadway and intersection improvement projects in urban downtown centers
  • Complete Street designs and planning studies
  • Transportation planning studies, including transportation master plans, due diligences, etc.


  • Work with a team of professionals to support our backlog of transportation projects
  • Assist in the preparation of permitting, design and construction documents
  • Prepare and/or review design criteria, drawings, and specifications
  • Technical and Design Report writing
  • Responsible for quality of work output
  • Design of roadways including the development of geometric layout
  • Development of grading, drainage, utility plans, etc.
  • Development of calculation workbooks, special provisions, and cost estimates
  • Knowledge of the MassDOT Design Guidebook


  • Knowledge of and experience in all aspects of transportation engineering including roadway layout, drainage, and      grading
  • Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Self-motivated
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to think critically


  • BS in Civil Engineering required
  • 3+ years of professional civil engineering experience focusing on transportation design
  • EIT desired, PE preferred
