Junior Environmental Planner

VHB seeks an Environmental Planner to join our growing Watertown, MA office. We provide environmental planning, sustainability, resiliency, and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) services to airports, state departments of transportation, and other entities. With a focus on strategic planning, policy development, compliance, and supporting technical analysis, VHB helps nation-wide clients meet regulatory requirements and identify and achieve their sustainability goals. Candidates for this position should demonstrate their ability to accomplish project tasks, work with teams, and provide excellent client service with innovative and strategic solutions.

VHB provides NEPA services to federal agencies and state departments of transportation to help them successfully define the project’s purpose and need, develop alternatives, analyze environmental impacts, and develop mitigation programs. Our NEPA services also include agency coordination, public outreach, and GIS/mapping. Candidates should provide information on their NEPA experience and roles on Environmental Assessments and Environmental Impact Statements.

Our sustainability reports and plans address air quality/ greenhouse gas emissions, climate change mitigation and adaptation, energy efficiency and renewable energy, water conservation and water quality, natural resource management, land use, solid waste management, community engagement, well-being and health, social responsibility, economic viability, and sustainable planning, design, and construction.  


  • Conduct technical analysis and report writing
  • Prepare NEPA documentation
  • Plan and participate in stakeholder meetings, public workshops, and public hearings     
  • Develop sustainability strategies and plans for organizations to implement
  • Prepare sustainability reports

Skills & Abilities

  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

  • Capable of coordinating and performing multiple tasks
  • Ability to problem solve and think creatively
  • Ability to travel
  • Knowledge of airports, transportation authorities, local governments, energy efficiency, waste management/recycling, climate adaptation/resiliency planning a plus


  • BS/BA in urban planning, environmental planning, environmental science, or related field
  • Experience in environmental consulting, planning, or related field
  • Advanced study or equivalent experience in urban or institutional planning a plus
  • Writing samples and references will be required
